OAK HILLS BOOK FAIR FAQs
Q: Are they any COVID precautions that I need to be aware of? A: Before you enter the book fair, you will need to check in at the school’s front office to show your proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test in the last 72 hours. We are sorry, but children that are not students at Oak Hills cannot attend the book fair. Everyone must wear masks while indoors and remain socially distant.
Q: When and where is the book fair taking place? A: Our Scholastic Book fair will take place this week (November 1-5) in the school library.
Q: Why should I shop at the book fair in-person rather than in our online Scholastic store? A: You can peek inside the books to see what you’ll get! It’s more fun! Plus, our PTA will earn 50% from all in-person sales in the form of Scholastic Dollars. We only earn 25% from online sales. These Scholastic dollars are spent to buy books for our school library, our teachers’ classroom libraries, and our annual PTA game night.
Q: I would like to shop with my child at the book fair this week. How can I do that? A: Join them for their class shopping trip! You may volunteer (click here) or just stop by (see the class schedule at the end of this message)! Don’t forget to bring your child’s wish list so that you can easily find the location of the items that first caught their eye!
Q: What is the wish list my child brought home? A: The students previewed the book fair this past week and created wish lists that they brought home to you. This is to give you an idea as to what your child is interested in, as well as which cart or table to find the items on. It is up to you if you would like to purchase those items. There is also information on the bottom on how to create an eWallet, which is a safe, cashless way for your child to shop.
Q: I won’t be able to shop with my child at the book fair this week but I’d like them to be able to buy something. What do I do? A: You can set up an eWallet (click here) so they can come to school cashless. You can print out their eWallet for them to bring, but we will also have that information in our system. We will also accept cash, checks (made payable to Oak Hills PTA), and credit/debit cards. Many parents put their payment in a sandwich bag or envelope with their child’s name on it. If you use a check, we will provide cash change if they don’t spend the full amount.
Q: How is the national coin shortage affecting our book fair? A: Due to the national coin shortage, we will automatically “round up” all cash purchases to the nearest dollar so that we do not have to give out coin change. The donated “change” will buy books for our school library PLUS Scholastic matches the donations to buy books for literacy non-profit organizations.
Q: Will you monitor what students buy at the book fair this week? A: No, the volunteers at the book fair will not be able to make choices about what the students purchase. Please have a conversation with your child about what they can and cannot buy. Besides books, we have posters, diaries, stationary, pencils, erasers, toys and more. Let them know what you would prefer they buy.
Q: What are the bins with the teacher’s names on them, near the librarian’s desk? A: Each teacher was asked to put books in their bin that they think will complement their classroom libraries. Students may purchase a book and gift it to their teacher themselves. At the book fair, the purchaser will receive a sticker bookplate that they may stick on one of the opening pages of the book. This way, students in their class and in the class in the future will know who donated that book. Q: My child’s class is going to shop at the book fair later in the week, should I be concerned there won’t be any good books left? A: No, we will be restocking books throughout the week, especially the popular ones.
